Well, for starters it’s announcement time. Verdun School Express is delighted to announce that BA student Amanda Pidlisny is joining the media ranks with her very own monthly column online, called, “Amanda’s World”. Amanda has great writing skills and has also had poetry published in a national publication.

Amanda will be commenting on her take on a variety of subjects, whether it be politics, sports, fashion, entertainment, maybe an interview with a famous celebrity or even a day in the life of a big city high school student, which will be her first column starting next week, titled “A Day in the Life of a Big City High School Student.”

At times, you might agree or disagree with her, but most of the time, you will have a smile after her reading her stuff. I know I did. After all, it’s Amanda’s World. Another exclusive from the Messenger Online!
Movie
His music reached billions, but he had one more dream to share with the world. Get ready and stay tuned to this site and in print for your chance to win a pair of tickets to see the long awaited music documentary of a lifetime and your chance to see on the big screen for the last time, the greatest performer of all time in Michael J’s This Is It, coming to a theatre near you. This highly anticipated film opens in theatres on Oct. 28th for two weeks only but we will be giving you a chance to see it for free. So get ready, you just never know when the postman rings!
RIVERVIEW
Another reminder of your chance to pick up a pumpkin from the Pumpkin Patch next to the school next Thursday at 2:30, have your child’s picture taken, pick up some goodies from the bake table with a hot chocolate.

Keep Thursday the 29th open for the Annual Pumpkin Exhibit and Haunted House evening, and also dip your hands in the squishy table and maybe run into scary characters along the main corridors as you never know who might be behind and tapping you on the shoulder. This always highly anticipated event is a must-see and it’s a treat to see those giant orange works of art for this community event.

Another date to set aside is Saturday, November 7th and the next big fund-riser bingo, so keep reading to find out about the Grand Prizes, and get ready for other big news from Home and School and a big Christmas raffle in H and S’ 10th anniversary year. Do I hear hockey tickets in the club section anyone?
BEURLING ACADEMY

Our local high school has kept your local reporter out of trouble and on the beat. So what’s been happening recently? On Sept. 24th, it was that ever popular Pep Rally, where the whole school gets a chance at warming up their school spirit with some great upbeat music and cheering on the various fall sports teams to a great start of season as they get to be introduced one by one.

Later on, it was the teachers versus students soccer game accompanied by the entertaining play by play of teacher Ian Alexander, with no student or teacher escaping his razor sharp wit. The students won 3-0 but our mischievous play by play announcer announced it as a 3-1 win for the teachers. A fun day was had by all.

Next on tap, on Oct. 1st was the Annual Terry Fox Run. Terry Fox never got the chance to finish his Marathon of Hope way back in 1980, but schools and organizations have taken up Terry’s challenge and dream of finding a cure for that dreaded disease called cancer, and BA is one of those schools and this year raised over 1300 dollars towards a cure.

The students and staff walked around the streets of Verdun, from Champlain to Crawford Bridge to LaSalle Blvd and back up to the school.

On the same theme on the following Sunday, it was the Annual CIBC Run for the Cure, which has become the largest single-day volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer. Even though death rates have declined in every age group since the mid 90’s, with the survivability rate of over 5 years of 80 % of those who are diagnosed, more must be done.

Last year across Canada over 28 million was raised and this year the March was held at Maisonneuve Park under a sunny but cool day and over 100 staff and students were up front and centre and raised a whopping $4000 with a Quebec total of 1.6 million raised. We salute the staff and students for taking the challenge in both events in searching for a cure against this feared disease.

We must not forget as well my favorite mascot, Beurling Bobcat, who was at all these events and also made an entertaining appearance at last week’s well attended Open House. After opening remarks by Principal David Abracen and VP Anne Marie Matheson and an informative presentation by the IBO Dept. it was on take the tour of the vast facilities, which will have its 50th anniversary in January of 2011, and still considered a crown jewel.

All areas were in full gear from athletics and swimming to the various arts areas to those always popular science labs and the various other academic subjects, and it was a chance for prospective newcomers to get a peak in view of the next school year and the registration period, which takes place after the holidays. So hats off to all for a great Open House.

BA Sports. It wasn’t a busy week last week, but there were some victories. In boys juvie touch football, the squad won their 4th in a row and have a record of 4 and 1 after edging Bialik High 22-21 this past Wednesday. The juvie boys soccer team wrapped up their season with a 4-2 record with a 1-0 win over Bialik High and await other results in the division in view of playoff hopes. Wow, what a few weeks it has been. HAVE A GREAT WEEK !
