50 years and always young.
Dawson celebrates 50 years of service to the Verdun community
(PL) - People come together from Montreal and beyond throughout the year to give tribute to a place that many call a second home.
"For the past 50 years Dawson remains a cornerstone of the Anglophone community", says Joseph Quinn, founding member of the Dawson Community Centre. "People of all ages come here to enjoy each others company and participate in their favourite activities".
Originally located in Griffintown as the Griffintown Boys Club, this pivotal centre moved to its newly-built, three story facility in April 1959. Now named Dawson Community Centre Boys and Girls club, the centre has thrived in its Verdun location. In 1960, the club house was officially opened by the Governor General of Canada, Georges Vanier, and his wife, Pauline Vanier. At first the club catered to the youth population of Verdun. Now, 50 years later, Dawson is a community centre that provides a invaluable service to all ages, from toddlers to seniors, english or french speaking.
Alumni, community partners, members, staff and parents were presents to the ceremonious launch event last week.
Throughout this anniversary year, planned events will highlight the important work of the centre and bring together those who have made it all possible.
