Waterfront Restoration Operations
The Verdun Borough hereby wishes to inform residents that waterfront restoration operations are being carried out in the Pointe-Sud area of L’Île-des-Sœurs as well as on part of the waterfront area between La Tortue and Natatorium piers, in the Desmarchais-Crawford neighbourhood. This work, which involves renaturalization and stabilization of part of this waterfront area so severely eroded by the current, is expected to continue until mid-December.
The first area concerned—137 metres long—is located in the Pointe-Sud area of L'Île-des-Soeurs, along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The second segment—approximately 50 metres in length—runs between La Tortue and Natatorium piers.
The main purpose of this project is to remove the ill-assorted materials (concrete, asphalt, steel, etc.) as well as stabilize and restore the waterfront along these parts of the riverbanks, by means of mixed techniques combining the use of flagstone paving, stones placed on inclined grounds and vegetation planting. The focus of this work is in high-traffic areas that are sensitive to erosion. The contractors who will be carrying out this work will have to use heavy machinery along the riverbanks.
This restoration work will require cutting down certain trees that are showing obvious signs of deterioration and that can't be saved, since they have grown through construction debris and other materials that will be removed. The renaturalization plan nevertheless provides for planting new trees, shrubs and vegetation particularly recognized for their stabilizing properties along riverbanks.
Authorized by the Ministère du Développement durable, Environnement et Parcs, these waterfront restoration operations will total $430,000. approximately 30% of which will be covered by the Communauté Métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM). For any additional information, residents may phone 3-1-1.
