VERDUN SCHOOL NEWS
Wow, what a month, Meet the Teachers, Governing Board elections, BA sports teams starting the fall season, a yummy chocolate drive, and the beat goes on, and as well from the LBPSB we get this, due to the Federal Election being called for October 14, 2008 the Lester B. Pearson School Board has changed the board-wide Professional Day originally scheduled for October 3, 2008, to October 14, 2008.This change applies to all schools.
VERDUN ELEMENTARY
VE was first off the mark with their General Assembly and a fair turnout of around 60 parents or so were on hand to see a rather very informative and complete presentation of the school’s services and programs after having been introduced to the school’s teachers.
Then it was time to have a new Governing Board elected, and this year there were 6 posts to fill with departures from last year and other parents having completed 2-year terms. Elected this year all by acclamation for 2 years are: Rene Letendre, Melanie Doherty McNeill, and Stephanie Little, a newcomer; and for a 1-year term: Natalie Duggan, Marie-France Labreche, and Christine Rodriguez, also a newcomer. They join the veteran Lynn Pidlisny on a two-year term. Christine Rodriguez and Stephanie Little are the Sector Committee and alternate reps.
As with all schools, other members of a governing board such as teachers and support staff are selected amongst their committees and a reminder to all parents that School Picture Day is on Tuesday, the 30th and a good chance to wear those new clothes.
RIVERVIEW
Riverview was next in line last Thursday with new Principal Deborah Gross hosting her first Meet the Teacher evening and introducing the staff, and here there were three 2-year posts to fill and with a major surprise here with veteran Natalie Miron failing to be re-elected, thus there will be a new GB Chair. Elected are newcomers: Amanda Kelly, Caroline Roy, and Amanda Wheeler. They join Lynda Davie, Maggie McDonnell, and Brian Johnston.
The chocolate drive is in full swing with those yummy Lamontagne delights with each case containing 40 bars at $2.00 a pop. The campaign ends on Oct.15th. There are all sorts of goodies such as: caramel, almond, and coffee bars. Betcha can’t eat just one! The top selling class gets to have a lunchtime pizza party and a draw for a $50.00 Toys ‘r Us gift certificate will be held amongst all those who brought in a fully paid case by Sept.19th, and the top seller prize is to be announced soon.
Last, but not least, Riverview has been selected to host the fall conference of the Quebec Home and School Federation. It will be on Saturday, October 25th, with the school playing host to delegates from across the province and there will be guest speakers with more details to follow for this prestigious school event.
BEURLING ACADEMY
The GMAA fall sports season is under way and BA has teams in boys’ touch football, 5 soccer teams, and one midget girls’ volleyball team with everybody having started action this past week.
In view of this, BA will be having their second Pep Rally this coming Thursday to get the year off to a cheerful start and introducing the various teams and giving them a rousing show of support and we’ll be on hand to check out the action and see if mascot Beurling Bobcat makes an appearance.
We also send best wishes to those students who will be participating in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure on October 5th. The run starts at 10 am from Dorchester Square, preceded by opening ceremonies. This is the largest single-day volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer.
