Reconstruction of rue Woodland
Between boulevard Champlain and avenue Bannantyne
(PL) - Starting last week, the Verdun Borough began major repairs on rue Woodland, between Champlain and Bannantyne. This work, which includes the complete reconstruction of the infrastructures—such as water and sewage pipes as well as repairs to the sidewalks and roadway—should take approximately 12 weeks to complete.
As it may be recalled, this work was supposed to be carried out last fall; however, due to a delay in receiving the certificate of authorization from the Québec government's Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et des Parcs and the early onset of winter last year, the Borough had to postpone this work to this spring.
Borough Mayor Claude Trudel is very pleased that large-scale work can finally begin on an artery that is also a gateway to the Borough. "We believe that the repairs to these infrastructures will significantly help improve Verdunites' quality of life, not only for those residents living on rue Woodland, but also for the residents in the area as a whole." In addition, the Mayor pointed out that "the work will be financed from a $2.5 million budget that had already been allocated, back in August 2007, to carry out this project."
Residents on this part of rue Woodland were previously notified of the date of the start of the work and the measures that would be taken to minimize inconveniences, such as parking arrangements and mail delivery. It should be noted that aside from rare exceptions, local traffic will be allowed on the part of rue Woodland where the work will be under way.
Many signs have been installed in the surrounding area in order to inform residents of the detours due to this work. The 37, 108 and 112 bus routes will also be detoured intermittently as the work progresses. Details on the repair phases and the detours for motorists and buses will be announced on the Home page of the Borough's website, under Info-citizens, and will be periodically updated.
In the opinion of André Savard, Borough Councillor and Chairman of the traffic and public works committee, "the water and sewage pipes along this very busy thoroughfare date back to the last century—to the 30s, in fact—and must be replaced. In addition, the roadway—highly deteriorated by the weakness in its infrastructure—will be fully redone according to today's standards."
In Phase 1—the first two weeks of this project—the work will be concentrated at the corner of avenue Bannantyne and rue Woodland. Subsequent work will be carried out section by section, on rue Woodland. Once the repairs have been completed, trees will be planted there to restore some of this artery's original character, after which it was named ("Woodland").
The Borough is urging motorists to drive very carefully and wishes to thank Verdunites—and particularly residents and merchants in the area—for their cooperation and patience while the work is under way.
