The Fête des voisins originated in France and these festivities were first held there in 1999, spearheaded by Atanase Périfan, a municipal officer in a borough of Paris. The goal of this event is to create solidarity between neighbours in order to build more human cities. The idea was adopted in Québec by the Réseau québécois des Villes et Villages en santé. This organization has been promoting this event since 2006
