VERDUN SCHOOL NEWS
BEURLING ACADEMY
Well, this it, as mentioned last week, the first ever fashion show, called Urban Rainbow, will be taking place this coming Friday at 7:30 in the BA Auditorium. The whole community is invited to attend, with tickets going for just $15.00 and with proceeds to be split between the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Grads of 2008.
The students have been getting ready feverishly for the past few months, to show off some of this year’s hot spring and summer trends from some big name retailers, and CTV Montreal’s Lori Graham along with myself will have the pleasure co-hosting this event.
Tickets are now on sale, through the students at the school, at the door, or you can call me at the Verdun School News office at 766-8232 where ticket pickup or delivery can be arranged.
If you’re also near a TV set this coming Tuesday the 15th, you might want to tune in to CTV News at Noon, as teacher-in-charge Miss Isabelle Alarie, along with student-coordinators Jessica Sinagra and Rachel Hutchinson will be guests during the “light segment” to talk about the show. So that’s this Friday at 7:30 for the Beurling Academy fashion show.
RIVERVIEW CLC
It’s gonna be a busy week as well here. This week is “Literacy Week”. For the students, there will be Storytelling, Creative Writing sessions and African Gumboot Dancing for grade 6.
There will also be activities for the public. From Monday to Thursday, the Learn and Laugh people will be hosting storytime for pre-school children for Verdun families with stories being in both languages. The times are from 9a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., thus you must confirm your presence by calling the school at 514-761-4524.
The big night, though, will be Literacy Night on Thursday fro 6:30 to 8 as the annual 2 for 1 Scholastic Book Fair takes place. There will also be a Readers Theatre, printmaking, and something different in the gym will be scrapbook making, so bring your own photos. Also, during the Book Fair, there will be a Second hand Book sale, so if you have some books to donate, you can drop them off at the school for the library until Wednesday.
Also, tickets for the Mother’s Day raffle will go on sale next Monday with tix at a dollar and 7 for $5.00. More details in our next column.
VERDUN ELEMENTARY
It was a proud music teacher as Miss Jennifer Hayden as she led her senior band in energetic timeless tunes at a special presentation for the Council of Commissioners during the last council session. Louie Louie and the theme from my favorite 60’s show, “Mission Impossible” were on the agenda and they breezed through them with ease.
Our local Commish, Doug Flook was also serenaded with the Happy Birthday song for his big day. The VE band has sure come a long way fro being a 4-horn band to playing at outside events such as this one and the famed Hard Rock Café. And the Band played on.
COUNCIL NEWS
There was also big news for Beurling Academy here at the same council meeting. Council finally, approved, amongst other projects, the replacement of windows, security doors in the stairwells, and the lower gym ceiling for a total of close to 1.5 million. So it should be a beehive of activity this summer on Champlain Blvd. for the building that will be 50 years old in January 2011. And the Habs are on the Move, Go Habs Go!
