Riverview and “LES CANADIENS”
As many of us can remember, we might have skipped work to mark the arrival of spring with the annual Stanley Cup parade and the chance to get up close and personal and a bit starry-eyed with Lafleur, Dryden, Robinson and company. Last Monday under a perfect sunny sky and no wind, I had the chance to witness those emotions on a new generation of hockey fans.
Five Riverview students; Apryl Labelle, Emma Robitaille, Amanda Graham, Keshella Dewitt, and Justin Lauzon, got their chance to get up close as well with some NHL stars, as the Quebec Breakfast Club, which Riverview is part of, hosted a day with “Les Canadiens” at the Old Port skating rink, which was closed to the public with the media invited.
Five students each from 24 schools were teamed with a player from the team, and Riverview got lucky and their player was none other than superstar, no.27, Alex Kovalev. The students got help putting on their skates and helmets with a little autograph signing thrown in from the Habs current leading scorer. Then it was off to the activities. Some groups took to the rink; some went to those ever popular inflatable structures. The Habs new no.1 goalie Carey, showed why his Price is Right as he was seen with one school pulling the dog sled.
All the students on this day also brought home a goodie bag containing a helmet, a mini hockey stick, and a Habs scarf. This was a day that the students, including this writer won’t soon forget. Go Habs Go!
BEURLING ACADEMY
Sports Update. There were some high and lows on the BA sports front with the indoor track championships, the Bantam boys indoor track team brought home the gold and the banner. Treyvon Grant led the team picking up 5 medals including 2 gold for 29 points out of the team’s 43.5 edging out Lindsay Place by half a point. The boys juvenile team finished in 4th with 31 points and was led by Kadeem Maxwell with 25 points, picking up 3 medals including one gold.
The girls Bantam team finished in 5th with 26 points led by a 3-medal performance by Ariana Solomon, and the girls midget team with only two members, the established firm of Young an Zuk Incorporated, got 3 medals, 2 silvers for Susan Young and a bronze for Kathleen Zuk. However, we must recognize the splendid show put on former BA student Shauna Agard, now with LCCHS, who, on her own, came in second with 5 gold and 1 silver for 40 points, two points behind Villa Maria.
