Verdun School News
GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON. Raffle winners, a successful wine and jazz evening, re-registration, basketball playoffs and a big week in mid-April. And the beat goes on.
RIVERVIEW
After a successful Open House with crowds of current and prospective new parents jamming the lobby, a wine and cheese and jazz evening was next on the agenda. Last Saturday evening, the Riverview CLC held a social event where people from both in and out of the community had a chance in an informal setting to meet some of the folks involved in the new CLC, along with our local commissioner, guests from the LBPSB, and, of course administrators from some of our local schools.

Dave Turner and his Concordia Big Band was on hand to supply some cool jazz which added to the evening with a few standing ovations thrown in. Secretary Rosemary and librarian the mild-mannered Jennifer Holmes took care of everybody at the service area with efficiency, and I just love that brie cheese Miss Jennifer. The good folks from Home and School were also on hand greeting guests and also held a half and half raffle.

We are told that construction for the main room for the CLC is well underway and announcement for some programs could come soon, with target groups soon to be interviewed with the view at getting ideas for some of the programs for the CLC.

We also would like to congratulate Carol Paradis of Beurling Avenue who was the winner in the “Disney on Ice’ raffle at the Open House and has a family 4-pack to see that great ice show won March 9th courtesy of Verdun School News and the Bell Centre.
REGISTRATION
Re-registration forms for all current Kindergarten through Grade 5 and Secondary 1 through 4 students will be distributed this coming week of February 18th, 2008, so parents get those forms back in as quickly as possible, as the Board needs these numbers to look at staffing and administrative requirements for the next school year.
BEURLING ACADEMY
We had a couple of happy winners in our Bruce Springsteen/Canadiens raffle last week during parent interviews. Student Orenzo Porporino’s name was the first to be drawn and picked the hockey tickets for this weekend for the Habs/Flyers game courtesy of Verdun School News and the “voice of the Habs”, CJAD, and student David Bellmare will be the lucky one attending the Bruce Springsteen concert on March 2nd at the Bell Centre courtesy of Verdun School News and the Bell Centre.

We would like to thank everybody who bought tickets and over 700 dollars was raised towards a color yearbook.

Spirit Week is coming up next week with loads of activities. One day will see a day of activities such as bowling, cabane a sucre, and a ski trip. Other days will see theme ones such as a Western Day, a Fun in the Sun Day, and the ever popular Pyjama day. So students please wear your winter clothes that day on the way to school as it is still winter. So have a great spirit week!

Sports Update. Two of the basketball teams made it to post-season action this past week. The juvenile girls’ basketball team trounced JFK this past Wednesday 48-8 in the preliminary round, which made for a good practice game for the quarter-finals this past Friday at the Study. Cassandra Loj led the way with 11 points followed by Katie Daoust and Brooke Udall netting 8 points each. The boys’ bantam team was also in prelim action this past Thursday at home against Hebrew Academy and a win would put them in the quarters on Monday the 18th against JFK.
