N.B. BAND ROCKS VERDUN ELEMENTARY
It was the turn of Verdun Elementary to welcome some special guests from out of town. The Carleton North High Senior Jazz Band and Choir from New Brunswick dropped in to VE as part of their annual field trip to perform in various schools in other parts of Canada, and this year they were on a Quebec City-Montreal tour.
About 40 students and their monitors were at the school last Friday to play with VE’s band and were hosted by someone they knew rather well. For music teacher Jennifer Hayden, this was a special visit, as it was from this NB high school, where she learnt her musical chops from the same music teacher, Peter McLaughlin, who was conducting the NB band.
We had a quick chat with Mr. McLaughlin about this trip over lunch break, and mentioned to us that about 60 % of these trips, which are a reward for good work, are raised through local concerts during the year and the remainder of the trip is paid for by the students.
We also couldn’t resist the temptation to inquire from Mr. McLaughlin about the younger days of his former student Miss Jennifer. He clearly stated that she was a model student and that she played the clarinet really well. Needless to say, Miss Jennifer will be relieved upon reading this good news!
The day, though, was about the two bands. The morning began with a workshop given by the NB band, with valuable tips picked up by the VE group and a little jamming thrown in. After lunch, it was a concert for the whole school, and time to swing and sway with some classic jazz and big band tunes played by some cool cats.
Even Miss Jennifer accepted a dance with her former music teacher during Jump, Jive, and Wail. The day ended with the two schools playing the great Sea Jam Blues, and, of course the classic “Louie Louie” which was also one of Miss Jennifer’s first songs she learnt many years ago.
