A number of VE students participated in a great initiative last Wednesday. They participated in the third Annual Verdun/LaSalle Peace Summit held at St. Lawrence Junior Elementary campus in LaSalle. The events revolved around the theme “Embracing Our Diversity”. The students were amongst 12 secondary and 30 elementary students. Guests included members of the Canadian Jewish Congress and the choir of Ecole des Jeunes Musulmans Canadiens who performed in the afternoon.
BEURLING ACADEMY
BA is fielding 3 girls’ badminton teams this year for the first time and even though the first two weeks of action doesn’t show in the scoreboard, it is not without effort and coaches Tamara Beach and Erin Dougherty-Hunter are dedicating their time to help the girls improve. The Bantam and Juvenile teams are winless after 2 starts and the midget team got their first win last Tuesday. All three teams will be in action this Tuesday hosting Queen of Angels at 4 p.m. This would be a great time to come and encourage the teams by showing your support.
The exchange students are back from their trip to Saskatchewan. Even though they were as teacher Debi Dixon says, ‘in the middle of nowhere’ they had a fantastic time. It was a 2-hour bus ride from Saskatoon to Kerrobert with lots of white plains on the way. Various tours were on the itinerary such as the University of Saskatoon and the Prairie West Grain Terminal which 80 % of the world’s wheat comes from. There was also time for fun stuff like paintballing and one night there was sleeping at a teepee at a native reserve and trying to cram 44 people into 4 teepees. Was that fun or what? BA will now welcome 20 students from Kerrobert who arrive in a couple of weeks on April 7th and who will be in the world’s second largest French-speaking city for the first time.
COUNCIL NEWS
It was approved at the February council meeting that a contract has been awarded to repair a certain section of the roof of Beurling Academy, which was considered to be high priority at a cost of $70,000. This is part of the Capital Projects Plan of the 2007-08 budget with the work to be done during the summer months.
Also, during the last council meeting, Director-General Bob Mills thanked the various Governing Boards for their input on the Principal Selection Criteria. This is the time of the year when Board Administration goes through the process at replacing Principals, who might be retiring, wishing a transfer, or possibly looking at a promotion to a Board position. The Principal criteria is a wish list to the Board for the type of administrator that might be required for a particular school. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Council announces its appointments during the April council meeting. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
