Verdun School News
GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON. With the St. Paddy’s Day Parade happening today, and everybody, of course, being green, I would like to announce that my long lost Irish twin brother, Robert O’ Wood wrote the rest of this column today. I am told he is happy to be in Canada. Have a Great Parade!
VERDUN ELEMENTARY
A certain number of students from VE will be participating in a great initiative this coming Wednesday. The students will be participating in the 3rd Annual Verdun/LaSalle Peace Summit which will be held at St. Lawrence Elementary Junior Campus on David Boyer Street in LaSalle.
The events of the day will be revolving around the theme “Embracing Our Diversity”. The students will be amongst 12 high school students and 30 elementary students from cycles 1 and 3. Guests will include members of the Canadian Jewish Congress and the choir of Ecole les Jeunes Musulmans Canadiens who will be performing in the afternoon, which is among some of the activities planned for the day. Members of the community are invited to this event, but note that there will be some restrictions to the classroom activities.

BEURLING ACADEMY
The school is fielding three girls badminton teams this spring and their first matches were held this week. On Tuesday, the Bantam and Juvenile teams both lost their first matches at John Rennie 16-0. This past Thursday, the Juvenile and Midget teams were in action at Howard S. Billings. We’ll have those results next week.
COUNCIL NEWS
It was approved at the February council meeting that a contract has been awarded to repair a certain section of the roof of Beurling Academy, which was considered to be high priority at a cost of $70,000. This is part of the Capital Projects Plan of the 2007-08 budget with the work to be done during the summer months.
Also, during the last council meeting, Director-General Bob Mills thanked the various Governing Boards for their input on the Principal Selection Criteria. This is the time of the year when Board Administration goes through the process at replacing Principals who might be retiring, wishing a transfer, or possibly looking at a promotion to a Board position. The Principal criteria is a wish list or a guide to the Board for the type of administrator that might be required for that particular school. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Council announces its appointments during the April council meeting.
Last, but not least, a reminder that Election Day next Monday will be a board-wide ped day, as required by the Elections Act. All daycare services will also be cancelled that day. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
