World Vision recognizes Beurling Academy
GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON. Last Monday, during the regular monthly council meeting, was a special evening for 4 high schools of the Lester B.Pearson School Board, including Beurling Academy.
Mr. Nick Azzuolo from World Vision Quebec was on hand to present plaques to those schools who participated in last year’s 30-hour famine. As mentioned last week, the 4 schools raised a total of $15,000 with about $4,000 from BA which participated for the first time.

Funds raised are being used to address the most critical areas of need such as water purification, food security, and the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

On hand to accept the plaque for the BA community was, Principal Chris Cyr, Vice-Principal Dona Bianchi, and teacher Sarah Legacy who was the prime mover and coordinator of last year’s 30-hour famine. Verdun Commissioner Doug Flook was also on hand to accept the plaque as was all Commissioners, whose schools that are part of their electoral district that received a plaque.

In a statement after thanking the BA students who helped out delivering food baskets for St. Willibrord’s, and Verdun E. students being recognized for their efforts by the Forum Economique in November, Mr. Flook mentioned, “as is proved often at the three schools in Verdun, when given the opportunity, our kids are capable of doing great things.” We second that motion.
BEURLING ACADEMY
From teacher Debi Dixon, we get more news concerning that much anticipated Saskatchewan student exchange trip that begun yesterday with an early morning flight. The students will be going to Kerrobert Composite School which has an approximate student population of about 260 students.
Kerrobert is a small town of only 1500 people about 75 miles south of Battleford. The students almost went breathless when they found out that there was no McDonald’s or Tim Horton’s. This trip is made possible by YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada and promotes cross-cultural awareness among Canadian youth aged 12 to 17. Travel costs are funded by the Government of Canada. The students will be trying to fundraise to cover around $7000. to host the Kerrobert students who will be coming here to the big city during Easter.

It should be noted that MNA Henri-Francois Gautrin has already donated $500.00 and the good folks at MAXI Verdun have opened their doors for the students to bag groceries on Saturday, March 24th. So it’s grocery shopping at Maxi on March 24th. So, once again, bon voyage, and if you know any contacts in a major company, please leave a message for Debi Dixon at the school.
RIVERVIEW
It recently came to our attention that Riverview is now part of the Quebec Breakfast Club. This non-profit organization, which is funded by various corporate partners and fund-raisers throughout the year, starts breakfast programs in about 20 schools ever year, with a long waiting list. After being on the list for many years, the Riverview program opened in early December.
The Club, along with providing a healthy menu of food to start the children’s day off right, provides the equipment such as, toasters, griddles, and warmers, as well as staff. The students are greeted by long time volunteer Jeanne Desjardins, who are served a nutritious every day before class in a welcoming atmosphere. What a way to start the day!

The pyjama fundraiser during this past carnival week was a success having raised $190.00 with the Mtl.Children’s Hospital on the receiving end and, lastly, look out for our special feature next week on the World of Reading at Riverview . HAVE A GREAT MARCH BREAK!
