Verdun School News
GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON. In the middle of the recent deep freeze, all one had to do was to remind themselves that those world-famous groundhogs Phil and Willie did not see the shadows, and from all reports, our local groundhog, Verdun Victor, was seen milling about along the boardwalk, so that’s great news, an early spring!
A belated thanks go out to Kayla Vardon and her parents for their hospitality during the interview at their residence for that special feature a few weeks ago, and we thank everybody for the great comments about that story. We hope to do more special features on some our local students.
ROD AND CHRISTINA
There was a slight case of Rodmania as we teamed up with the Beurling Academy Grad Committee to present the Rod Stewart Raffle with all monies raised going to grad activities, and the winner going to see Rod “Rockin in the Round” on Feb. 24th at the Bell Centre. The draw took place this past Thursday evening during the teacher interviews and we’ll have the winner’s name next week.
At the same night, raffle tickets also went on sale for another great concert on March 23rd. We’ve also teamed up with the Grad committee, courtesy of the Bell Centre and Verdun School News to present the Christina Aguilera raffle to win a pair of prime centre red tickets for her upcoming concert.
BEURLING ACADEMY
The season has come to an end for the 5 basketball teams and one team is in the playoffs and two others are headed for preliminaries this coming week. The Midget Girls Division 3team, with an 8 and 1 record at press time and one last game this past Friday, will be in the semi-finals this Monday.
The Midget Boys Division 1 team, also at press time, was 6 and 5, and one last game this past Wednesday, is advancing to the preliminary round this Wednesday at Lakeside Academy. These rounds will decide the seeds for the quarters and semis.
The Bantam Girls Division 1 team will be playing a tie-breaker game this Monday at Queen of Angels to decide who will advance to the quarter finals next Tuesday the 20th at PCHS.
RIVERVIEW
It would seem that librarian Jennifer Holmes looked at the calendar and noticed that this Wednesday is Valentine’s Day, and most likely thought that the adult book exchange would be a no-go for that day, so the next exchange will be on Wednesday, Feb. 21st at 7 p.m. A recap for the lunch time book club winners for the month of December are: Garima Saini, August Darey, and Autumn Darey. Great reading!
HAPPY RETIREMENT
Last, but not least, we send our best wishes to JimWallach, who has taken a well-deserved retirement in December. Mr. Wallach, Big Jim to this writer, was a VP at STM for half a year during the 1999-2000 year, and came back to assist Verdun Regional the following year, and even, though, wasn’t with us for long, left a mark of respect amongst
students and teachers alike. As he takes his retirement with his wife Cindy, also an administrator, we sincerely hope he’ll take in more games on TV with his beloved New York Yankees. Thanks for the memories, Big Jim! HAVE AGREAT WEEK.
