Verdun Adopts Bylaw on Needless Idling of Motor Vehicle Engines
(PL) - As announced in late October, Verdun Borough Council adopted—at its meeting on December 5—the bylaw aimed at reducing nuisances caused by needless idling of motor vehicle engines.
"In this way, Verdun wants to contribute toward reducing motor vehicle exhaust fumes that are causing global warming," stressed Borough Mayor Claude Trudel. "Not allowing needless idling of parked vehicles is therefore one of the ways we can meet this objective," he added.
Drivers' habit of needlessly idling motor vehicles results in wasting a significant amount of fuel and is detrimental to air quality as well as to residents' health.
Enforcement of the bylaw
The bylaw is designed to prohibit drivers from running the motor of their parked vehicle for more than 3 minutes on public or private property. Moreover, following an amendment made to the Bylaw relative to traffic and parking in the Verdun Borough, Verdun's local surveillance officers and the police will be able to issue a statement of offence to the owner of a vehicle parked on public or private property whose vehicle engine has been running for over 3 minutes, even if the owner is not inside the vehicle.
