VERDUN SCHOOL NEWS
GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON. It’s been another busy week on the local school scene, and a busy month of December coming up, let’s check it out.
VERDUN ELEMENTARY
Verdun E. has a Service Learning Program which has grown to 9 full projects which every grade 6 student and some grade 5 students participate throughout the year devoting a minimum of 5 hours of their time under the guidance of spiritual animator Mary-Anne Fyckes. One of the volunteer projects is helping out seniors do their weekly shopping, and this endeavor was recognized for a volunteer award by the Forum Economique de Verdun.
Student Kassandra Gauthier and two former Verdun E. students, Dylan Vincelette and Aleisha Pare, now at Beurling Academy, travel with parent volunteer Chantal Jacques and senior volunteers from Dawson Centre every second Tuesday and pick up senior clients and accompany them to a local grocery store to do their weekly shopping, with the students providing much needed physical help.
This past Wednesday the volunteers of this program were honored at Borough offices in a special evening, met Borough Mayor Claude Trudel and other local officials, and signing the golden book on behalf of everybody was parent Chantal Jacques. Congrats go out to all those involved.
RIVERVIEW
The recent Scholastic Book Fair was another success with lots of young happy faces getting some new books for that great report card. There were also some winners of draws held during that evening. The winner of the family 4-pack for passes courtesy of Verdun School News, for the advance screening for “Deck the Halls was Kelly Tibbo, and the winner of the 2007 Guinness Book of Records draw was: Giancarlo Caparusso.
News from librarian Jennifer Holmes that the winners of the lunchtime book club for October are: Gloria Ha and Daphney Butler-Payne, both having read 20 books each. The next Adult Book Exchange is on Wednesday, Dec. 13th at 7 p.m.at the school and with the holidays coming up, this will be a great time to pickup books you haven’t read for those quiet times.
BEURLING ACADEMY
We would like to thank all those for the great comments made regarding last week’s column concerning BA’s PSI flag-raising Day.
We had a chance to be at the touch football game between the teachers and the Boys touch football team, and we were right it was an attempt to win on the part of the teachers. We had to leave early, and at the time of departure, the teachers were already behind four touchdowns to one, despite a valiant effort on the teachers’ part and notwithstanding the fact that Andrew Henry, a former football star we’re told, was also playing. One student mentioned to us that we might be missing out on a major defeat, thus it would seem we missed out on some history in the making.
We also took in a project on medieval times around the year 1000 a.d. the same day in which we got to meet Merlin the Magician, and Sir Archer, the protector of the castle, and other characters of the day.
There were also exhibits on the foods of the times, and a neat table containing antiques and jewels of the day, materials depicting the weapons of that era, and an area set aside for some of the textiles used for the garments worn in those days. We were informed that VP Dona Bianchi was seen admiring the colorful materials earlier in the day. Could it be that she is thinking of making a special outfit for next year’s Open House?
We also want to congratulate the girls’ Bantam volleyball team, who, even though they lost in the finals to Rosemount High a few weeks ago, it was the first time the school fielded a volleyball team and they made it to the finals in their first year and came home with the silver. Circle your calendars for December the 14th, which is the date for the upcoming annual Christmas Jazz concert under the direction of music teacher Gary Lindner. Tix will be available at the door and the show starts at 7 p.m. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
