Verdun Elementary remembers
On Nov. 11th, 1918, at 11 a.m. the armistice was signed and it was supposed to be the war to end all wars.
We’ve come to know this day as “ Remembrance Day and every year, the Nation remembers its war dead and honors those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives in the name of the freedom that we enjoy today. Verdun Elementary also paid their respects last Friday with a meaningful ceremony to our fallen heroes as staff and students gathered in the gym to pay homage to past veterans. Principal Joanne Brady-Merola opened the proceedings with some opening remarks mentioning to the students why we were gathered here before turning things over to music teacher Miss Jennifer.
Student Page Ramsay played an excellent rendition on the trumpet of that military tune, “The Last Post. This was then followed by the Kindergarten students singing, “Do you Know where I find Peace to be followed by Miss Diana’s Grade 3 class reading a story called, “the Poppy, and singing a couple of thoughtful songs for the day, “ When Johnny Comes Marching Home and “Where have all the flowers gone.
Principal Merola then announced that the gym would be renamed, “Remembrance Gym and unveiled a plaque dedicated to the veterans of past wars to be installed in the lobby area. The morning ended with a touching moment when parent Julie Dixon, whose husband is serving with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, laid a wreath, along with two students at the foot of the Canadian flag.
RIVERVIEW DAYCARE
It’s time to get your dancing shoes on as the school, through the Riverview daycare, will be holding a fund-raising dance this coming Saturday at the Legion on Verdun Avenue at 7 p.m. The cost is only $15.00 which includes music and food, and, of course drinks will be sold at those low Legion prices, and there will also be a half and half draw and your chance to win some holiday cash.
All profits will be split evenly between the daycare to buy new toys and to the school for each classroom for an outing or other classroom enhancements. There will be no tickets sold at the door, so you can purchase tickets at the Riverview School Daycare and you can call the daycare at 514-762-2717. Tickets will be sold until Friday. See you next Saturday and dance, dance the night away and raise funds for the students while having fun doing it.
From Diane Lussier, Chair of the Home and School, we get a big thanks to all those hot lunch volunteers that make the hot lunch program a success, with a special thanks going to Georgia whose back this year to continue her cooking talents even though she’s got no more students at the school.
BEURLING ACADEMY
It’s going to be a big day at the school this Wednesday. First, there will be a major announcement in the morning, and then The Annual Open House will take place in the evening at 7 p.m. as Principal Christine Cyr, in her first open house at the school, along with other members of administration and staff will be on hand to greet all those looking at BA as educational option for the next school year.
The school features three academic programs along with a great fine arts program including music and dance, a swim program and an extra curricular sports program. The school is located at 6100 Champlain Blvd. between Brown and Valiquette. See you at the Open House.
And a special congratulations goes out to the girls’ Bantam volleyball team, who, even though they lost in the finals to Rosemount High last Saturday, it was the first time the school fielded a volleyball team and they made it to the finals in their first year. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
