Verdun School News
GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON. The supermarket stores have stocked up, your local department stores are advertising big time, and, of course the drugstores are not far behind. The boxes and bags of miniature chocolates and chips are out in full force on the shelves. Have you stocked up? Get ready to trick or treat!
BEURLING ACADEMY
We got a note this past week from our IBO Community Projects contact Sarah Legacy to say that the annual CIBC Run for the Cure at the beginning of the month was another success. Despite it being a cold rainy day, 75 students showed up to support this worthy cause. This year Beurling raised almost $5800.00, and with fewer students than last year, they almost matched last year’s total of $6000.00.
The next project is with an organization called Samaritan’s Purse, where shoeboxes are filled with gifts and sent overseas. Last year over 100 boxes were filled, and also last year, over $11,000.00 was raised in various projects for a variety of causes.
SPORTS UPDATE
It’s playoff fever for three soccer teams at the school as they go for the City Championships which will be held this coming Saturday at the Concordia and Ed Meagher fields. The Bantam boys Division 1 unit, after having finished the season with a 5-2-1 record, will be traveling to Loyola for tomorrow’s quarter-final match up. The Bantam girls Division 3 squad will host Howard S.Billings in the semi-finals next Thursday at 3:30 at Queen E. Park.
The Juvenile Girls team is also in the playoff mix. They travel to John Rennie High on Tuesday for their quarter-final contest. We wish all 3 soccer teams good luck en route to the City Finals.
The Bantam girls division 3 volleyball team has also clinched a playoff spot having won their three matches played last Monday at Sacred Heart School. They will be playing their last 3 matches tomorrow at Beaconsfield High.
RIVERVIEW
As usual, lot of stuff is going on. Get ready to get a scare! The Annual Haunted House and Pumpkin Exhibit Evening is on next Monday the 30th. Doors will open at about 6:30 with a small admission. Members of the community are also welcome to drop by to see the great pumpkin works of art. So, that’s next Monday, and be careful of what you bump into or if someone taps you on the shoulder, don’t turn around!
R:As the chocolate fundraiser is finished, there was still outstanding money left to be paid and unsold chocolates to be returned as of this past Friday. Each box is $75.00 and keep in mind that profits go towards students’ activities.
The lunchtime book club started off last Monday with a whopping 54 students enrolled and preparing for another fantastic year of reading and work on their own book. This is just one of the ways Riverview is working to encourage literacy and a love of reading. The goal, once again, is to read 100 books, and yes, we are told there will be a pizza party after the goal is reached.
We also get this reminder from our administration contact. The school, in keeping the safety of the children in mind, is asking parents to not go to their child’s classroom without first reporting to the office. It is recommended, we have been asked, to encourage parents to help their children to become independent and enter the school on their own with their classmates. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
