Recycle Them by Taking Part in the Verdun Borough's
Those falling leaves… leaves of GOLD!
This year, the Verdun Borough will be organizing 5 collections of leaves (for composting) between Wednesday, October 25 and November 22 inclusively.
The collections will be carried out every Wednesday, starting at 7 a.m., on the following dates: October 25, November 1, November 8 , November 15 and November 22.
Residents are invited to put their leaves in see through bags and place them by the curb after 7 p.m. the day before the collection or before 7 a.m. on a collection day. These leaves will then be transported to a composting site so that the volume of landfilled garbage can be substantially reduced. Please note that garden waste, such as annual plants and withered (dried up) perennials, may also be included in the bags of leaves.
In 2005, 60 metric tons of leaves were collected in Verdun within these special collections, which means just as many tons of garbage that was detoured from sanitary landfill sites.
"Recycling leaves for composting is a beneficial operation in many ways. To begin with, it gives rise to savings, as each metric ton of leaves processed into compost costs the Borough approximately $10/ton, whereas the same ton sent to a landfill site costs $48.60/ton, to which is added a penalty of $10/ton," explained Borough Mayor Claude Trudel. "Besides, this operation helps us meet the objectives of the Québec Residual Materials Management Policy, 1998-2008, which requires that municipalities reclaim 60% of recyclable materials by 2008," added the Mayor.
We're hoping that many residents will contribute to these collections of leaves and remember that each effort counts for sustainable development. Your "leaves… of gold" definitely deserve better than winding up in a garbage dump, don't you agree?
