Verdun’s junior dragonboat team gets a taste of competition
The only team of 13-17-year-olds to compete in Quebec Cup
This past September 24 and 25, after weeks of intense training, Verdun’s newly formed junior dragonboat team took part in their very first competition; the Quebec Cup.
Being the only team comprised of 13-17-year-olds, the juniors were registered and competed in the adult division, yet still managed to beat a number of adult teams.
The juniors raced distances of 250m, 500m and a grueling 2000m race, in which they performed particularly well. A number of parents were on site to encourage their kids on and Verdun’s three other teams also cheered on the young paddlers. They had so much fun that a number of them quickly expressed interest in doing it again next year. Any teenagers out there, between the ages of 13-17 years of age, who might be interested in joining a junior dragonboat team for the 2007 season, are encouraged to email club management, at juniors@verdundbc.com
A big thanks to Verdun borough sponsors
The junior team was made possible thanks to the financial contribution of numerous sponsors within the Verdun borough. Major partners were the Caisse Populaire Desjardins and the Club Optimiste, as well as Intersport Sport Campus, provincial MNA Henri-Francois Gautrin, Fernand Thériault Service Station Inc, La Société de développement commercial Wellington and Métro Joannette. A big thank you to the 22Dragons Club, as well. Thanks to all of them, these youngsters were able to experience the thrill and satisfaction of competition, in a fast-growing sport like dragonboating.
