In 2008, an estimated 22,400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die from it but breast cancer death rates have declined in all ages combined and in every age group since the mid 1990s, which is an encouraging sign but more needs to be done.
For the past several years now, Beurling Academy has participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure fundraising event, which has become the largest single-day volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer.

Last Sunday on a crisp, sunny October day, under the organized leadership of teacher Miss Amanda Liste, around 90 students along with some teachers and many parents, along with Principal David Abracen ran and walked downtown from and back to Dorchester Square and brought in over 5000 dollars, up from about 3500 last year, and with the result , BA was the highest amongst high schools participating in terms of funds raised and second amongst all schools after O’Sullivan College, which is a testament to the students having solicited funds from family and friends.

Miss Liste would like to thank teachers Ian Alexander, Sara Marquis, Jen Clark, and Maggie Panko, along with Principal David Abracen for their assistance, and tells us the Top 10 earners were: Graham Velenosi, Olivia Baddeley, Kara Brown, Julie Coveny, Laura Bustamante, Natasha and Sabrina Fatouros, Sabeena Dorrington, Isabelle Ladouceur, and Reem Ahmed. We salute the students and teachers for their great efforts this year.

And, once gain, a reminder, if you would like to find out more about the school’s community programs and, other programs as well, don’t forget the Annual Open House is on this coming Thursday evening from 7 to 9.
