Riverview and Disney on ice
Riverview will be holding their annual open house this coming Thursday from 6:30-8 pm for those parents looking at the school as an elementary option next year for their children. It’s also portfolio night where current parents will take a look at some of the work done by the students in the recent months.

As well, with Riverview celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, Verdun School News and the good folks from Home and School will also be on hand, as we team up to give you the chance to win a family 4-pack to see Disney on Ice on Sunday, March 9th at 3 pm. Raffle tickets are: 1 for $2; 5 for $3; 10 for $5 and your best buy with the super pack at 30 for $10. See you at the Open House and, don’t forget to bring those extra dollars!

A snow day in December caused the postponement of the VE holiday musical, but as we know the show must go on, so went on it did last Monday as music teacher Miss Jennifer and fellow teachers once again showed their creative side with the musical, “ December Around the World”. Most students were involved, and it was about two kids who wanted to get back home for Christmas and they were played by students Andrew Rochon and Victoria Roy.

They tried to get back by clicking the old remote which was a PS2 remote, but every time they did, they ended up in various parts of the world, such as Africa, Japan, or France. The play’s first number was an uplifting Mexican song which invoked, “La Fiesta”, enough to warm us up on this wintry day. We are glad to report our two young travelers finally got home after a quick trip around the world.

Lots of leftovers from before the Christmas break that need recognition, so let’s check it out. Miss Debi’s Pharmaprix gift-wrapping brought in 200 dollars towards the yearbook, which the grads are trying to have most of it in color this year. Miss Amanda Liste also tells us that the Christmas card campaign was a success bringing in around 2200 dollars and selling about 200 packages of cards, with proceeds going to children in Burundi ensuring that they have proper school supplies. A penny drive was held at the same time for the kids in Burundi, but they were so many pennies, that at press time, we still didn’t have a count, although we heard it was around $300, but can’t be sure.

Grade 11 student Brittney Williams, with the help of teacher Miss Legacy, organized the annual Christmas shoe box collection and that was also a success with 34 boxes and should have arrived just in time for the holidays in Africa. The boxes were filled with such items as school supplies and toys, etc, depending on age and gender of child.

Last, but not least, Miss Tamara Beach gives us great news about 3 former students. Students Julian Amorelli, Kayla Belec, and Jessica Brisebois, had their personal stories about smoking published in a book called, “Let’s clear the air: 10 Reasons not to Start Smoking.” The book is now on sale at Chapters. And get ready for Raffle no.2 with major prizes to be drawn on Feb.7th and your chance to attend some major events!
