Tennis fans object to tennis fees
As a result of the decision by Verdun’s officials to impose a tennis fee in Verdun including L'Île-des-Soeurs, tennis fans decided to mobilise to firmly oppose this decision which they believe is unacceptable.
During a meeting held at the Elgar Centre in L'Île-des-Soeurs, they formed a committee to defend their position and to request a meeting with Marc Touchette, councillor for L'Île-des-Sœurs. The committee’s official spokesperson is Mr. Gilles Pétel. He is seconded by Mrs. Chad Bradley and Mr. Claude Beaulac.
A petition was also initiated to support the committee and to make Borough officials aware of the negative consequences of this measure. The committee will meet again on the 23rd of October at 19h30 at the Elgar Centre to clarify the situation. All tennis fans are invited to attend.
Another side of the story
The observation is that not all tennis fans in Verdun share this point of view. The president of the Woodland Tennis Club, Mr. Serge Laurendeau believes that the Borough should have the means to better control the use of tennis courts.
According to Mr. Laurendeau, people who don’t live in Verdun often take advantage of Verdun’s facilities. Some even use the municipal courts to offer private lessons. He said that the Borough must recruit people to regulate and supervise the use of courts, which in turn justifies the imposition of a fee. If the increase is reasonable, the club members would not oppose the decision being considered by the Borough.
We will report on further developments.
