Verdun School News
GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON. Can you believe it, it’s back-to-school week after a couple of months of those carefree summer days, of working at a summer job, or maybe doing the day camp thing. Whatever you did, we hope you had a great summer, not too much sun, and are ready for another year of learning, and don’t forget this year is Riverview School’s 80th anniversary.
Needless to say, Quebec School Boards have been busy getting ready for the new year, such as the hiring of new teachers, major maintenance at the various schools, and our local buildings were definitely on the list. Question: have you bought all your child’s school supplies?
07-08 Calendar
There is one less school day this year with 181 student days, with the addition of a new ped day of sorts on May 16th, entitled the Special Needs School Level Committee. The first day back is this Thursday the 30th, with the last day being Monday, June 23rd.

The Christmas break is from Monday, December 24th to Friday, Jan. 4th inclusive with the first day back on Monday, Jan.7th. The March break is from March 3rd to March 7th inclusive, and two weeks later, the Easter weekend, earlier this year, is during the March 21st-24th weekend.

With the new ped day this year, this means there are 12 ped days during the school year, nine of which are set by the Board, and the remaining three are set by the local schools, thus it is important to get your school’s calendar.

Parents and newcomers to the Verdun community should also take note that there are usually modified hours for some grades on the first day and should contact their local school if you did not get info at the end of the year or during the last few weeks.
SUMMER WORK
While we have been off during the summer months, our local schools have had some work done as others in the Board. At Beurling Academy, roofing work on a part of the roof was carried out at a budgeted cost of about 60k, and the Cycle 2 science labs, which we got to see this past week, part of the MEQ’s new educational programs, at a budgeted cost of about 135k was also done.

At Verdun Elementary, a major window replacement towards the back part of the building was also done at a budgeted cost of about 210k.

All schools in Verdun, like many others in the Board, have had some work carried out in terms of security upgrades, some of which you will notice, and some of which you won’t, and, of course we can’t mention what they are, although we can we can tell you one which you will notice, especially if you’re part of the Riverview community. There will be a new reception area at the main door of the building, moved from the inside of the building, thus allowing a better monitoring of visitors, and the chance to get greeted by a warm smile from Cindy. We also had a sneak peak at this project this past week and it looks great. HAVE A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR.
