The «blue bag» for recycling in Verdun
Recycling alert: Awareness Brigade Already Out in Force on Verdun Territory
(PL) - The recycling awareness campaign announced by the Borough at the beginning of the year officially got under way last weekend. The "Recycling Alert" brigade in fact launched its first information stand during the sidewalk sale on Wellington Street.
This brigade will be on hand on Verdun territory all throughout the summer. Awareness operations will be carried out within the main events or at places where walkers and cyclists very frequently pass. The objective of this brigade is to reach the largest number of residents possible throughout Verdun territory. As it may be recalled, recycling has been compulsory in Verdun since 2004.
"The challenge that we are delivering to all Verdunites is to double the rate of recycling on our territory between now and the end of 2007," recalled Ginette Marotte, Borough Councillor for the Champlain-L’Île-des-Sœurs district and Chairperson of the Borough's environment committee. "In 2006, we recycled only 3,500 metric tons of waste, which is clearly insufficient. This year, we want to recycle 7,000," Mrs. Marotte added.
The awareness operations conducted by the "Recycling Alert” brigade are among the methods being used by the Borough to prompt Verdunites to recycle more. An inspector dedicated to recycling was also hired recently and is being assisted by a team made up of borough patrollers and "brigadiers" who have been specially trained. They are already going up and down the streets of Verdun to make sure that residents and merchants comply with current rules and regulations.
Verdun residents are invited to come and meet the "Recycling Alert' brigade all throughout its summer operations. By stopping at the brigade's stand, you will receive invaluable advice as well as literature that will help you become "better recyclers".
