Beurling Academy gym teacher Bill Morris
Happy retirement, Mr. Morris
It seems like yesterday when a young gym teacher named William Morris started at the very memorable Verdun Catholic High in 1973. Little did he know that he would still be there 35 school years after. At the end of this current school year, Bill Morris will close the door, for the last time, to the gym office, he so proudly “owned” for all these years.
Mr. Morris started at VCHS in 1973, later joining the St. Thomas More staff in the early 90’s after the school had moved to the VCHS building some years earlier, later splitting his time with Verdun Regional, and then there for the exciting rebirth of the Champlain Blvd. building as one of the gym teachers of Beurling Academy.
For all these years Bill Morris went about, in that unassuming way of his, of keeping our students in shape and caring about their physical well-being.
It was as a parent and as a member of the St.Thomas More Governing board and PPO that I came to know Bill Morris, even though the shy type always had the time to say “how are you”, or to answer if we asked what he thought of some of the weekend’s sporting attractions.
We salute you Mr. Morris for the many years of fine dedication to the teaching profession, and special thanks for taking a few moments of your valuable time recently, while getting ready for another day in the gym, to take a picture for this column.
On a personal note, I would like to thank you on behalf of my son and the children of all fellow STM parents, who you taught how to swim in that wonderful pool at BA, and chances are you also taught many of those parents, and also a special thanks on how you encouraged the reluctant to get into the pool.
May you soon enjoy your chance to sleep in an hour or two and to catch up on maybe a few more sporting attractions on the television.
Happy Retirement, Bill! You’ve more than earned it.
MORE V.P. NEWS
With the recent appointments of two new vice-principals to our local schools for the next school year, we’ve graciously received from the new appointees, some bio info to inform the community, and the Board has blessed us with some great administrators.
On the elementary side, Sylvie Monette, who will be splitting her time between Riverview and Verdun Elementary, comes with over 20 years experience at that level. Miss Monette started in Beausejour, Manitoba in 1986 and for the next 15 years taught in Cycles 1 and 2, and was also an art specialist.
A change of scenery brought Miss Monette to Quebec in 2002, where she taught for 3 years at Forest Hill in St. Lazare in the K and Cycle 1 level and for the last 3 years she has been an educational consultant at the Board for the K and Cycle 1 level.
Over at Beurling Academy, Veronica Johnson, comes with a wealth of experience at the secondary level for both the PSBGM and the Baldwin-Cartier Board on the West Island and adult sector areas, where she now serves as an adult educational consultant for the LBPSB.
Miss Johnson comes with loads of community experiences too numerous to mention here, but includes being a former member of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and also lots of experience in dealing with the press and publicity which will serve her well in dealing with your local reporter.
She also has a BA with distinction from Sir George Williams, a Diploma in Education and a teaching English Second Language Certificate from McGill.
We wish both of these fine young ladies good luck in their new duties and extend a special welcome to the Verdun Community. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
