Music Monday at Verdun Elementary: it was a hit
It was a national event and at the same time across Canada, one o’clock in the east, as more than 600,000 students representing 1500 schools from every province and territory across Canada celebrated the third annual Music Monday - a nation-wide simultaneous concert to celebrate music education in Canadian schools, and Verdun Elementary was front and centre.
Students and teachers from coast-to-coast took their music programs outdoors to perform the same song at the exact same time, uniting the country in song. Music teacher Jennifer Hayden led the choir with this year’s theme song which was called “Our World” which was preceded by Grade 6 student Chelsea Gearey conveying her experiences with music in her life, and the event also attracted the attention of our good friends at CTV News, which ran a great clip on Montreal’s no. 1 supper hour newscast.
Music Monday is an annual event coordinated by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada, and next year it will be on Monday, May 5th.
RIVERVIEW
It was another successful literacy week at the school with parents and members of the community taking in the various activities such as story telling and a readers’ theatre. Illustrator Genevieve Cote showed off that forgotten art of drawings, which was the basis of those early Mickey Mouse cartoons and had lots of students with open eyes at the drawings shown that night.
One hit was the printmaking room, where visitors got a chance to get their hands down and dirty while sampling mixing inks. Always a treat, the 2-for-1 Scholastic book fair had the usual lineups waiting to get in before the doors opened, and the chance at some great end of year buys.
The highlight for literacy week had to be the long awaited launch of the book, “Friends Like Me” conceived and created by the Lunchtime Book Club. The students worked on this book for most of the year and their efforts showed. A quick glance through the book gives us a look at the various cultures, their foods, and a lot of ideas about the various countries depicted; it’s a journey around the world in the form of drawings and writings. The kids even drew pictures, shown at the end of the book, of the library staff and volunteers. We don’t want to say that Miss Jennifer has pigtails in her picture, but maybe she had some the day kids drew the pictures. Great work everybody, and it is well worth the $10.00 purchase price, and you can order a copy by dropping by the office during regular hours.
Riverview also had some winners or prizes during recent events. The winner of the “Sunday Brunch in the Sky” raffle was Debbie Thompson and the winner of the Fantastic 4 Movie draw during the Book Fair was Jeannette Graham.
The Grad Committee also had winners at their flea market. They are: cake winners; Meaghan Keough, movie tickets; Frank and Sandy Jones; and the mother’s day package went to Peter Sucheki. We didn’t have a winner at press time for the half and half but the ticket number was 0822883, call the school office if you’re the one.
