Barriers have been set up for about ten days now and DETOUR orange markers have appeared in several key areas in Verdun. It’s a race against time because concrete and asphalt are effective only when temperatures are mild, so workers are hurrying up before the first signs of snow.
Among these works, residents will notice a section of Verdun Street between Brault and Godin streets that is under construction. This particular work will be spread out over four weeks if weather conditions permit. The goal is to reconstruct some sections of the sidewalks, repair catch basins and manholes, as well as resurface the pavement. The route of bus line 107 will be diverted during the reconstruction work.
Other works have started in a section of Bannantyne Street between Rielle and de l’Église streets and will last for about four weeks. The same type of work as the one for Verdun is on the agenda. The routes for buses 37 and 108 will also be diverted to other streets as needed.
Phase III of the construction work of Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard between de l’Église and Hickson streets started last Tuesday. The contractor hopes to layout the uncompleted sections of the Boulevard in the next five weeks. The geometrical arrangement of this particular section will therefore be similar to that already done for phases I and II.
Drivers must demonstrate a double dose of patience, especially in the first two weeks when excavation will take place for the work on the aqueduct and sewer. Local street closings, diversions in opposite directions and no-parking notices are inevitable. Access to Verdun Hospital, the Auditorium and the Denis-Savard arena will however be maintained except for a few hours in exceptional cases. There might also be a temporary diversion for bus line 37.
Residents of Willibrord Street between LaSalle Boulevard and Wellington streets can find comfort in the fact that despite the inconvenience, they will have a brand new street before Christmas. These major resurfacing works for the pavements and sidewalks will include the replacement of principal ducts and the rebuilding of service pipes for the aqueduct and sewer.
The re-surfacing of the pavements and sidewalks on Rolland and Edna streets will be completed on deadline date.
A special authorisation was granted to contractors who are responsible for the re-paving of the local street network to continue working on Saturday starting at 7:00 am instead of at 9:00, as stipulated in municipal regulations. “Our objective is to complete as many sites as possible before the first snow arrives”, said Borough Director Gilles Baril. “By issuing this special authorisation to workers, we optimise our chances for meeting our objectives”, he added. Residents can call 514-765-7075 for more technical information on the works.
Residents are also invited to call the Accès Verdun office (3-1-1) or to visit the web site of the Borough at: (ville.montreal.qc.ca/verdun – rubrique Info-travaux). Finally, it should be noted that residents living in the affected areas have received notices regarding parking, collection of household waste and mail delivery.
