A public meeting organised by the Comité d'action des citoyennes et citoyens de Verdun (CACV), Centre des femmes de Verdun, la Casa C.A.F.I. as well as the Round Table on Intercultural Relations in Verdun will be centered around the theme of the federal elections. The meeting was planned in such a way that there are no useless bawling out and gratuitous attacks against each other.
Candidates will each have an equal amount of time to address four major themes: the rights of women, housing and poverty, the environment and culture. A free and open question period is also on the agenda during which other issues can be discussed. Véronik Sansoucy of the Green Party, Daniel Beaudin of the Conservative Party, Daniel Breton of the NDP and Thierry St-Cyr of the Bloc québécois have confirmed their attendance. According to Chantal Lamarre, CACV director, “Liberal Party candidate Christian Feuillette refused to participate.”
Annick Diop of the Round Table on Intercultural Relations in Verdun will serve as moderator of the meeting. Note that Casa C.AF.I. is an assistance organisation for immigrant families. By holding this meeting in the afternoon, it is hoped that members of different community organisations as well as retirees and mothers having an hour or two free before the kids come home from school will be able to attend.
From extraordinary ideas, light comes into being – that should be everyone’s hope!
Federal elections: a debate in Jeanne-LeBer at last!
Until now, the 2008 federal election campaign has not offered an interesting discussion by candidates about their parties’ programmes in the riding of Jeanne-LeBer. Happily, community groups in this district took the initiative of organising a meeting to be held on Monday, October 6 at 1:00 pm in the community room of the Casa C.A.F.I., located in 4741 Verdun Street near Verdun metro.
