As usual, we have a few things to tidy up from just before the holidays…Miss Tamara Beach’s ERC classes in Sec 1 and 2 raised a total of $286.45 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by way of various campaigns such as Pennies for Patients and Chores for Change, and that wonderful initiative called, “Socks for Pops” where students went out and collected and/or purchased new pairs of socks.

This year the final total was 254 pairs beating last year’s total by 60 pairs. These socks will be given to the good people of “Dans la Rue” who, in turn, will be given to disadvantaged youth.

As well, just before the break, students from the Secondary 3 Community Leadership class visited the Welcome Hall Mission and gave the gift of time. They volunteered by filling bags of falafel mix as part of the preparation for the Hall’s Food Drive, which included hygiene products, toys, and other food and supplies which were given out to some of Montreal’s underprivileged families and individuals. The students filled one huge box in two hours.

The students also received a tour of the Welcome Hall Mission and were given some background information about the variety of services which are offered such as: Family Services, Men’s Services, Youth Services, Children’s Services, Rehabilitation Services, Employability Services as well as a Thrift shop.

They also were given the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful and friendly volunteers and employees. We have been asked to send a note of thanks Christine Myatt, the Administrative Assistant of the Welcome Hall Mission, who organized our visit and kindly provided the students with an informative tour.

It’s also going to be an exciting day next Wednesday the 20th as students from the Sec 4 Literacy class of teachers Patricia Staniforth and Dan Cuvalo will be visiting the studios of CTV Montreal, which we had the pleasure to organize. The students will be taken on a brief tour of the newsroom and some of the production and editing suites. Then for the highlight will be taken down to the main studio where they will sit in during the Noon Newscast and watch it live with anchors Mitsumi Takahashi and Todd Van Der Hayden, along Lori Graham watching her do the weather in front of her green screen.

Afterwards, they will have a chance to ask questions of the News Crew and have some pictures taken. Needless to say, we will be there checking out this neat event.

BA SPORTS. With a little less than month left in the GMAA basketball season, it seems questionable if any of the school’s basketball teams will see postseason action, except for possibly the boys’ midget team, but we remain hopeful.

The boys’ juvenile team is at 3 and 7, boys midgets are 3 and 1, and the bantam boys are 3 and 3. The girls’ juvie team is at 3 and 4 and the girls’ midget team is at 2 and 5.

Verdun Elementary

The school will be holding its Annual Open House next Thursday the 21st from 5:30 to 7 with a short presentation in the library at 6 by Principal David Chisholm about the various programs and the chance for newcomers who are considering VE as an option for their children come next September. VE offers the 50/50 option offered by the LBPSB.

Also on that night, your chance to win a family 4-pack to go and see “Disney on Ice—The Princess Classics” live at the Bell Centre on Sunday March 7th courtesy of Verdun School Express and the Bell Centre. Tickets are 5 for $5.00 or 20 for $10.00. So see you at Open House.

Riverview

Home and School would like to thank all those who bought tickets to the recent Christmas Hockey Raffle with a pair of hockey tickets in the Club Section courtesy of Verdun School Express and CJAD Radio.

The grand prize winner was Mr. Michael McKenzie who had a grand time at the game, and $1430 was raised going towards school activities, a welcome surge of cash seeing that the highly profitable chocolate drives are now almost a thing of the past in many schools as a result of nutrition policies of the School Board, even though nobody was forced to buy them.

Watch out for more details for the next raffle which is Disney on Ice on March 7th.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.
