BEURLING ACADEMY: The last of the Curriculum evenings/General Assemblies took place this past Thursday at the school with parents being greeted by an enthusiastic group of student-volunteers at the door.
After a welcoming address by Principal David Abracen, with his Administrative team looking on, parents received their child’s schedule and list of teachers to visit on this night where parents got a chance to hear in general terms a course’s outline for the year and what is expected of them.
Unfortunately, not too many parents stayed for the general assembly at the end of the evening for Governing Board elections which had 4 vacancies, which not surprisingly, all 4 parents were acclaimed. The parents are: Sandra Parker, Kim Mitton, and two familiar faces formerly with the Riverview Community, Mr. Brian Johnston, and Gentleman Jim Bytheway. They join Lynn Pidlisny, Chrystal Henderson, Angela Vaudry, and Ron Williams in their second year.
This low turnout was very disappointing in view of this being a Major School Change year. We encourage parents to get involved in this process and show up at public Governing Board meetings and voice their comments in this very important issue, in what might be the most complex MSC that the Board has ever had to decide upon.
For parents whose children will be going into Grade 7 next year and for newcomers to the area, the upcoming Open House will be your chance to visit the school and take a look at this vast building with all its great programs and facilities. You will have a chance to talk to the admin team and the various teachers about the various course offerings. So that’s on Thursday, Oct. 8th from 7 pm to 9:30 pm.
A fair-sized group of students from the senior dance and drama classes, along with dance teacher Miss Jennifer Mender lucked out this past Wednesday as they got to see the Montreal premiere of the updated version of “Fame” courtesy of MGM Pictures and Verdun School Express/Verdun Messenger, Verdun’s only door-to-door weekly newspaper.
The students also received posters and FAME make-up mirrors and Fame t-shirts were also thrown in for a few students. From all accounts, it was a BA at Fame movie party, and we certainly hope dance teacher Miss Jessica also enjoyed a night out at the flicks, a much deserved break from the classroom or dance studio.
BA Sports. This could be a big year for the athletics area, which might see lots of city titles come this way. The juvenile girls basketball and volleyball teams are deep in superstar veteran talent with plenty of grads and holdovers from last year, as well the two girls soccer teams with plenty of veterans as well are also expected to go into post-season action, and most of all, we can’t forget superstar athlete Treyvon Grant is back on track and once again is expected to clean up at the indoor track events in February. So a big good luck to all sports teams this season.
The up-to-date ticker sees the juvenile girls at 2-0 after a 6-0 victory over Bialik this past Monday on the strength of Bria John’s 3 goals in one shift. Awesome! The midget girls are also undefeated after 3 starts with 2 wins and a tie on the strength of some stingy defence and excellent goaltending from Amanda Pidlisny. The juvie boys team are at 1-1 and the midget boys are winless after 3.
The boys’ touch football team is at 1 and 1 and the juvie girls softball team is also at 1 and 1 after a 13-3 trouncing over Villa Maria this week, and from Coach Tamara Beach, we hear the girls juvie volleyball team was on fire this past Wednesday as they beat KSS and tied Westmount in the first round of tournament play this season. BA will be hosting two tournaments this season, the first one being on October 19th.
